My Students

Several years ago, our Whittier School’s Weeds and Seeds Club began our community garden. The Weeds and Seeds Club is made up of students from first grade to sixth grade. It is a voluntary club that meets during lunch. The club has planted daffodils for the spring, made and hung bird feeders in the winter and hosted a plant sale. The club organized a school garden where they tend the seedlings and plant the garden. Then over the summer families volunteer to water and weed. The garden is not only a school garden but a community garden. The produce grown is delivered to a local food pantry. Students are not only learning about the process of growing food but more importantly being a good citizen and helping others in need.

My Project

Our garden has been going strong the past couple years and it is time for a garden refresh. The garden beds need new soil and compost to help it continue producing so that the students can see what is involved in the process of growing. In early spring, students will help plant and tend the seedlings, planting the seedlings in the garden. During recess the students water and weed. This project is also seeking to make watering the garden easier with a rolling garden hose cart and lightweight hoses. Those families that have been helping with summer water can the challenges of dragging those long heavy hoses all the way to the garden. Thanks so much for supporting our students in growing food and providing it to the local food pantry.
