My Project

A student approached me recently, asking me to be the faculty sponsor for Garden Club. It's a new club and we'll have to start from scratch, but I was thrilled to have the opportunity. I love plants. Have I killed a few in my time? Not intentionally, but yes. Who hasn't, okay? I've learned a lot about horticulture in the past several years and it's become a real passion of mine.

I want to share the joy I find in working the earth, growing my own food, and nurturing something over an extended period of time.

Students at my school spend all day hunched in a windowless classroom, absorbed by a computer or phone screen. I'm not condemning our educational model--learning to use technology is important. However, it's also healthy and valuable to disconnect. Garden Club will be an opportunity for students to take a break, touch something real, and learn about science in a whole new way.

Eventually, we hope to work with Environmental Club to start a composting program, donate food to our own culinary classes, and work with community gardens. We also have plans to do self-sustaining fundraisers in the future. Right now, we just need a little help getting started.
