Help me give my students incentives for learning. Games for alternative learning. Power strips and headphones to make learning more accessible for all.
My students are inquisitive, creative, and full of energy! However, unlike most students, my students are impacted by a physical or developmental disability. Being a self-contained teacher in one of the largest school districts has its challenges. One of the biggest challenges that I face on a daily basis is how to get my students interested in the lesson. What is a better way to learn a new lesson than by playing games?!?
By playing games, my students are using all three types of learning models: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic.
A simple review game or alternative learning style has shown to have better retention of material in students. Regardless of the game, on the computer or a board, you have to set up the students 10/10 times want to play. My students want to learn as much as they possibly can. They love learning!
My Project
Each item already has a home in my classroom, it just needs some help getting through the door. By providing additional headphones, extension cords, and power strips, my students will be able to play and learn on their Chromebooks amongst their peers instead of being confined to an outlet. Having a variety of pens and pencils allows my students the ability to choose what color team they would like to be on instead of having the Pen team vs the Pencil team. Most lessons are interactive and based around a color scheme and by having these supplies my students will be able to collaborate among their peers more frequently and easily. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students' work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
