Help me give my students opportunities for critical thinking, collaboration, and competition through games like Mysterium, Settlers of Catan, and Cytosis: A Cell biology game.
Dulles High School students represent a wide variety- from our Math Academy, which focuses on STEM, engineering, and architecture, to our award winning FFA groups, and our neighborhood students whose parents and grandparents went to DHS. With such a diverse group, the library needs to be a place that everyone feels welcome.
My Project
Before the pandemic, the library was a social place on top of being an academic space. One of the most popular activities for most of my high schoolers to do was play board games. I was a new librarian and had a few board games that I inherited from my predecessor, but also board games I had from my classroom. Uno, Jenga, regular card games, and chess were among the most popular.
These social games allow students to do something productive, engage their critical thinking skills, and interact with their peers in a positive way.
Competition and collaboration are key to the success of students. It has been proven that board games stimulate creativity, critical thinking skills, and, depending on the game, collaboration.
These games will also be available for check out so that students can bring them home to enjoy with the community as well for a short period of time each week.
