Gaming Around in ELA

My students need a variety of board games to practice ELA skills.

My Students

I teach English language arts to more than one hundred seventh grade students. Our school is a Title I school in rural South Carolina where a significant portion of students live below the poverty line.

My classes are composed of both high-achieving gifted and talented students, and struggling students who are often reading below grade level.

Each of these groups has very unique needs in order to be successful, and each group needs encouragement and guidance to reach their individual potential.

My Project

So often in English/Language Arts classes we are so focused on covering material, analyzing stories, preparing for state testing, and taking notes that we forget to let our kids have fun with that they're learning. With this in mind I would like to incorporate English related board games into my classroom both to review material covered throughout the year but also to reward students for all they have accomplished. By giving them this opportunity students will be able to see what they're learning as important, but also to have fun while utilizing their newly acquired skills. In this way, it will be an educational win-win.
