My students are curious and passionate. They are eager to learn all they can and make a difference in the world they see around them. Many of my students talk about going to college and then coming back to make their community in Hartford a better place. They are brave, bold, and unafraid to speak their minds about what they know is right.
My students are hungry for an education that speaks to their passion and feels relevant to their lives and challenges.
They are empowered and inspired by working for social justice, and, in my classroom, we talk daily about issues my students see in the headlines that affect their daily lives.
My students are founding the first board-gaming club at Capital Preparatory Magnet School. For our selection of games, I've purposely selected games that have a collaborative bent and need to be played as a team or group. Our school has a strong culture of athleticism, but this is not the only way to work together on a team and win.
My students need an opportunity to practice their social-emotional skills in a safe, fun learning environment.
We use restorative circles in our advisories and our game club is an extension of this structure. The skills they'll learn playing these games are life skills: helping students practice productive communication, healthy competition and collaboration.
There are many games out on the market that are less expensive and easier to play, but we are focusing our attention on games that ask more of students. Rather than focusing on the luck of a dice roll, these games force students to think logically, to make plans, to explain their thinking, and enjoy each other's company.
