Help me give my students the opportunity to learn through games! I pair our target questions or words with an open-ended game to improve participation and overall retention of skills.
I am a speech pathologist who works with students with disabilities. I work with students ranging in age from birth through 21.
My students are sometimes in special education their entire school career, and at times it can be challenging to keep them eager to learn.
We are in a small town where students don't always get the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of learning opportunities outside of the school. It's our job to make it fun! The students are very responsive to learning when it does not look like work. My students are eager and excited to practice and learn.
My Project
Students who qualify for speech and language services often receive therapy for many years. These students face burnout from practicing skills that are already challenging for them.
The solution--Gamifying the materials to make learning more fun!
For example, a student who is working on articulation (speech sounds) may need to work on the sound "R" for over a year. The child can complain about becoming bored of the same words over time. When we pair flashcards with a game like Banana Blast or Picky Kitty, the student becomes more engaged in the activity that would otherwise be monotonous to them. We also use these games like an Abacus or Tally Counters to get more repetitions during the session. Children like to "beat" their previous amount of speech productions. Teachers Pay Teachers materials provide worksheets and activities for students to take home to practice their sounds or goals. I would use the gift card to print materials for both school and home and bind them with the Paper Punch Binder for durability.
Students learn best when they are engaged with a desire to learn. Working on skill deficits while playing an open-ended game allows the students to have fun while learning!
Please help my students build skills and avoid burnout by purchasing these gamifying materials for my speech and language classroom. Thank you!
