Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am posting this request in order to help my students recognize the beauty and importance of the geography of the United States and how U.S. geography has affected us both historically and today.
I currently teach fourth-grade general education at a culturally diverse school located on the north shore of Staten Island. Most of our students are from low-income households, and many have never traveled off of Staten Island. After presenting several geography lessons to the students, I was shocked at how little they new about New York State and U.S. geography. They were unfamiliar with the names of other states, important cities, historic landmarks, and physical features of the United States. Given the importance of our geography and how it has affected our country's growth historically and economically, I feel compelled to give more to these students that just textbook material. Geography has to be more than just words on a page or maps.
I believe that several puzzles and games--including a Scholastic "Talking" USA puzzle, the Great States board game, and the Scrambled States of America board game--would help enhance geography lessons to become more of a "hands-on" experience for my students. There are currently seventeen children in my fourth-grade class who would greatly benefit from these materials. I truly believe that children have individual learning styles and at this young age--just reading about geography and looking at maps will not convey the meaningfulness and richness of U.S. geography. By providing these children with visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic experiences with geography, I can help the children come to appreciate the subject matter and recognize the the importance of geography in history and how it continues to affect our lives.
