Math is omnipotent in real life; yet, many students fear the subject of math at school. Many times this "math phobia" turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy, where students come to believe that they simply cannot "do" math, further hindering their math abilities. Teachers need to address this "phobia." One way to do this is to help students learn how to do math the "write" way. During the 2008-2009 school year, I will be teaching a general education fifth grade class, in a Title 1 school, located in a culturally diverse neighborhood in New York. Many of our students (and their families) are English Language Learners ("ELLs").
