My students need games to help with conversations as high school students come to mentor them. They talk about school, goals, and life. These games will help keep conversation flowing while they are building priceless relationships!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have a very diverse population at LMJHS. Over 50% of the population receive free or reduced price lunch. We have a mentoring program in which high school students work with our at risk students. The goal of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to interact with positive high school role models who will encourage and motivate students to succeed in school.
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others" - Mahatma Gandhi
We surveyed our students last year at the end of the program and they said that games would be helpful during their visits. Games would be great conversation starters and help build relationships while playing games. My students are great kids who often just need a little extra guidance. We want to provide them every opportunity possible!
My Project
High School mentors last year stated how games would have been very helpful while they were mentoring the Junior High students. It is sometimes hard to keep conversations authentic and flowing during their meetings. Checkers, Jenga, Uno, etc. will allow students to engage in conversations while concentrating on playing the games. The games will help take out those awkward silent moments and help guide the mentoring sessions. Students will feel at ease and have fun too!
The mentoring program benefits all students involved.
These games will help foster priceless relationships that will motivate our students to become more successful in school.
