Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is one where all of our students are provided with a classroom and school environment that encourages academic and moral excellence, and conveys the worth and dignity of each child, the excitement and joy of learning, the beauty and wonder of life. A life that moves beyond self is the order that is essential to learning and living.

Our school is representative of our linguistically diverse community.

I teach over five hundred students each week. Over ninety percent of them are Hispanic, eighty-four percent are considered low-income and about fourteen percent are English Language learners. Our school is also unique. We have dual-language classrooms in each grade. Students are learning in two languages, English and Spanish simultaneously.

My Project

Board games in the classroom serve a variety of purposes. They can provide an opportunity for students to develop new friendships, help them practice social communication, and provide learning opportunities in authentic ways.

Students who have opportunities to play board games on a regular basis are more empathetic, respectful, and responsive to others.

These circumstances also provide students situations where they are interacting with others that they may not have spent time with during other unstructured times. It's my goal to teach my students the different games, then invite parents to a Game Night. My students will play with their families with the hope that parents see the value of the game boards in their homes.

There is nothing more gratifying than observing children at play who are making new friends, laughing, and simply enjoying the social aspect board games bring to a classroom community and extend it to their homes.
