Games Galore to Enhance Literacy and Math!

My students need reading & math games such as vocabulary cards, context clues, and addition/subtraction cards and headphones.

My Students

“Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning…They have to play with what they know to be true in order to find out more, and then they can use what they learn in new forms of play.” ~ Fred Rogers My students love to work in centers! They can demonstrate skills they have learned.

Our school houses almost twelve hundred students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

We are an underfunded, Title 1 school, in an inner city, where many ethnicities come together to learn and explore while speaking over forty languages! The students in my second grade class are a diverse bunch. They live in a high poverty area and they all receive free breakfast and lunch. My class consists of students with very diverse educational needs. I have students who speak English as a second language and students who read anywhere from a kindergarten to a third grade level.

My Project

The students in my class love to work with friends on the rug and share their love of learning. With the donation of these math and literacy games, students can work together to solve and demonstrate their knowledge of the concepts taught. Prefixes, suffixes, contractions, are some of the skills that the students will master with this donation. Studies have shown that students can learn more from working with their peers. Educators widely recognize that students do not learn well when they are isolated "receivers" of knowledge. Collaborative learning exercises, such as peer learning centers, group presentations, collaborative papers, and discussion groups are important components of our classrooms because they encourage active learning, giving students the opportunity to become more deeply engaged with their learning and with one another. Using interventions on the computer are part of our daily routine. The headphones will be used every day so students can focus on their learning.

The donation of the literacy and math instructional materials will allow my students to work alone or interact with one another to explore and expand their learning.

The centers will provide my students the opportunities to enrich and enhance their appreciation and understanding of the topics presented throughout the school year. Your generosity and kindness is greatly appreciated and my students will be so grateful! They truly enjoy working with their peers in the learning centers.
