My students need games to practice social skills with their peers. Telestrations is a great example of a game that requires social understanding and communication.
I am a special education teacher with the high school. I teach social skills courses for students who struggle with peers, teachers, behaviors, and social interaction of all kinds. These students have amazing personalities, but sometimes struggle to show them.
Practice makes progress.
Each student's practice involves lots of time, energy and resources. I am strongly invested in their ability to be successful. It's amazing to watch a student who has struggled with socializing to be able to make friends independently!
My Project
Each day, my students come to my class for a lesson on social skills or cultural themes that influence them. When we finish our lesson, I always leave about half the class period to talk with them about their social needs or to practice social skills through game play, puzzles, and general conversation. I can guide students through difficult situations they face and give them support while they attempt to learn something new.
My students have amazing personalities but sometimes experience barriers in social situations which cause their words and actions to be misinterpreted.
When we play games together, I can identify some of the challenges that cause them to struggle with peers and guide them to a new way to interact.
