I have seven students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.
My students are working on interacting with each other in a variety of different ways. One way to build social interaction as well as working on taking turns is through board games. We need options of different board games that are easy to play so students can choose a game to play with their peers.
Students will use board games to work on taking turns, following directions, interacting with each other and communicating.
Students on the autism spectrum often have difficulty playing and interacting with each other. They need practice, modeling and guidance to learn how to to do this. Having more board game options in our classroom will give students the opportunity to choose which game they want to play. Some students need some motivation to engage with peers in a game and having a choice means they can decide what game they play.
The board games in this project will not only work on social and communication goals but also basic academic skills such as letters, numbers, colors and sequencing. I am so excited for my students to be able to have more options in a structured game time and can't wait to see the progress they will make with social and communication goals.
