Games for Growing Mathematicians

Help me give my students purposeful play! Scientists have shown it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain unless it is done with play where it takes between 10 & 20!

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. I currently teach 46 students 3rd grade math daily. Students' ages range from 8-10 years old. I love that my kiddos have such a thirst for knowledge! With your help, I want to cultivate their love for learning.

Albert Einstein stated that “Play is the highest form of research.” My students learn best when they are actively engaged in purposeful play.

However, this can be difficult with a limited funds for manipulatives/games. There are many mathematical games out there that would help my students learn through play and I would love to integrate them into our daily learning.

My Project

These math games will be used for many years to come to help students learn through play. Students will receive hours of learning time through these mathematical games in class.

"Scientists have determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain -- unless it is done with play, in which case it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions!" - Dr. Karyn Purvis

What books are to reading, mathematics is to play. These games will not only help increase spiral review of learned standards, but also allow students to practice with on current skills. Teachers throughout the OGLES may also borrow these games from a "Math Game Library" that this project will help create. This will, therefore, benefit not just one class, but every classroom in the school.
