We are a Title I, K-12 school with about 250 students total. This year, I teach Social Studies and Science in grades 4 and 5, with a total of 46 students. Some years, I have 3rd grade incorporated into the rotation for a total of approximately 55-60 students. I have found that even the hard to reach students truly enjoy history and science. Many of our students in our school do not have access to a computer or internet at home. Our school has a free breakfast program that is paid for with a federal grant for low-income area schools. Over 75% of our students receive free or reduced price lunches.
My Project
My enrichment class is a mix of 4th and 5th graders this year. (possibly 3rd graders mixed in next year). My enrichment class has been geared toward reading, science, and social studies. I have plenty of resources to help support those subject areas.
The board games of Monopoly, Life, and Payday is a great way to incorporate financial literacy in my enrichment class.
My students love any chance to play a board game and work as a team. These board games provide students a look at real life financial problems and how to solve them in a fun and exciting way. If students are having fun, they don't realize that they will be gaining the skills they need to be financially literate and successful as adults.
