Welcome to my ESL class! In our school, 36.3% of students' first language is not English, additionally, 16.9% of students learning English. I am an ESL teacher in the high school, working with students who are new to the country and new at learning English.
My school is a grade 6-12 in-district charter school.
We have some of the best students enrolled in the district. This is a school that students enjoy being a part of and parents are proud to send their students to.
We are a smaller school, serving just over 400 unique students. Our students come from various socioeconomic levels and backgrounds with 72% economically disadvantaged. This year, I will focus on teaching newcomers and levels 1 and 2 English as a second language class. It is very important that these students have structure and learn routines. My students are mainly Spanish-speaking, followed by Portuguese.

We are excited how well the snacks have been helping students concentrate in class.
Many of the students elect not to eat lunch in the cafeteria and come to class hungry. I started to provide health-ier alternative snacks for them, which has been very successful. I have seen students who refused to work, start working while they eat. This time we are requesting some alternative snacks-such as instant oatmeal and ramen noodles, along with chips and cookies- (yes they requested some cookies).
In addition to snacks, we would love to add to our classroom collection of games. In ESL I have been allowing students to play academic focused games in class to encourage them to speak in English more. They have been loving the screen-free play time.....with their snacks...
