My Project
When asked what clubs they would like to see at our school. Students suggested a gaming club and while initially this seemed like a farfetched idea, after talking to students, I have come to the following benefits of creating our Gamers Unite Club that enhance the academic and social emotional needs of students. Students selected the club name, Gamers Unite, to represent the different students that came forward to participate. Gamers Unite can excite students to attend school regularly, enhance their STEM reasoning and enhance school climate through improved social relationships.
Gaming can have a positive effect on students’ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) performance.
The games chosen for Gamers Unite will enhance students’ abilities through experience with multi-step problem solving, making predictions, analyzing patterns, abstract thinking and reasoning and build stamina related to productive struggle. These are fundamental skills in STEM learning.
Students interested in gaming represent a wide spectrum of diversity including varied socioeconomic status, language, academic ability, age, and gender. The activity brings these diverse students together in a space where they all ‘speak the same language’ and are able to use their diverse skills to support one another. This gives students the opportunity to identify and hone skillsets that they may not have known they possessed and build a level of confidence that will transfer to the classroom.
By supporting Gamers Unite with a Nintendo Switch and games, you are supporting students’ school attendance, helping to enhance students’ STEM reasoning skills, and creating a safe space for diverse learners to be welcomed and celebrated.
