Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game. ~ Michael Jordan
As students with disabilities, it is important that they are able to participate in Special Olympics Team events with appropriate equipment for events, practice, and conditioning.
My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students. My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities. A majority of them are also English Language Learners. They are an active group that loves sports and competition.
My school is located in a large, urban city. Of our 3,100 students, 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my particular students are low-income, have disabilities and/or are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learner status or disabilities hinder their academic or social-emotional growth.
My Project
My students need a game toss, softballs, and a beanbag chair. The game toss and softballs will prepare them for the Special Olympics softball throw events and the bean bag chair will be used for stretching during conditioning by our students who are in wheelchairs. My students are competitive and high spirited; they enjoy being athletes.
My students are ready to bring home gold medals!
These resources will allow students to practice and be ready for Special Olympics games and events. My students work hard and deserve to have appropriate resources to prepare for and compete in their events.
