Do you remember the excitement you felt the first time you picked up a beloved book and could truly read the words on the page in front of you? How about the first time you won a game you recently learned how to play? Think back to how proud you were and how quickly you wanted to share that success with every other person in your world. My students share in that feeling of accomplishment and engagement in their learning all year long.
My students are inquisitive, ambitious, engaged learners who ask thoughtful questions and talk about their discoveries throughout the whole day!
In my first grade classroom, it is my intention to foster an environment of positive risk-taking for all of my students by offering opportunities for engagement, collaboration, and deeper thinking. Students in my classroom are compassionate young people who constantly desire to learn together. Opportunities for productive struggle are crucial for developing confidence and comfort as a learner. Access to high-quality literacy and STEM activities are essential for first graders throughout the school year and beyond.
My students and I are fortunate to be able to begin this school year in our classroom, in person, with some modifications in place to keep everyone healthy and safe. In the spring, we were taken aback by a sudden distancing from school, from our academic content, and from one another. We were unprepared, but we did our best to stay positive and finish our year together and strong. First graders are incredibly social, however, and learning is most effective when children are able to work together, take on challenges together, and come to conclusions or solutions with one another.
This project will afford students the opportunity to engage in interactive gameplay, both remotely and in class, to develop social interactions in safe and appropriate ways that we all have been missing during the pandemic.
With a gift card from Teachers Pay Teachers, my students will have access to interactive games that can be played on our classroom digital platform by being present when we are in the room face-to-face, as well as played remotely when we are not together. They will be able to solve problems with peers and share their learning with one another in our class app.
