I am the super lucky teacher of 60 of the most hard-working, sweetest, creative multilingual kiddos one could ever have the pleasure of working with. My kids come from families where languages such as Spanish, Hmong, Persian, Mandarin, Ukrainian, Polish, and Romanian are spoken in the home. As their multilingual teacher, my job is to help them grow their English language proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. As much as I can, I try to bring STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) into my lessons, as it engages my kids and allows me to help grow their English language proficiency in a way that encourages them to be thinkers, problem-solvers, and leaders.
Games and manipulatives are so important in the process of English language learning and moving toward proficiency for newcomers-they encourage communication with others while individual learning takes place.
My kiddos LOVE anything hands-on, and they are THRILLED when we play games! Little do they know...learning is taking place! All of these games and manipulatives will allow me to meet my kiddos where they are in their English language proficiency, and can be used across grade levels. I've had many newcomers enter my classroom this year, and these games and manipulatives will help them increase their English vocabulary. The games and sequencing cards allow me to work with my newcomers in a low-stress context, which means they are more comfortable taking risks and speaking a new language as they are playing a game. Since this is my first year as a multilingual teacher, I have very little of these types of things, and what little I have purchased on my own has been used multiple times. We would LOVE to have some new games and manipulatives to continue to make learning English FUN and interactive!
