This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in elementary school in a rural community in eastern North Carolina. Their interests are extremely varied, but the one thing they all have in common is curiosity and creativity! Our students are dedicated and run with any learning opportunity provided to them.

Social awareness and collaboration are big parts of the media center's environment, and we want to give our students broad and exciting learning opportunities all day, every day.

Gaming has become part of many school media centers, and for several good reasons. Students today have been brought up on games and their brains are wired to think about challenges and leveling up. Gaming also calls on reasoning and deductive skills. While gaming is great, in the 21st century we primarily think of gaming as related to technology.

Very young children learn best through play- this can also be true for older elementary school students!

In order to supply my students with actual hands-on gaming activities, I need board games! The games I have selected will challenge the students in their thinking but bring about fun in ways which they may not be used to. Our media center promotes social learning through collaboration, so I have selected several games which will allow them to use and boost these skills. Other games like Battleship involve using strategic and logic skills. Some games just relate to the students' interests, such as Operation.

When students come to the media center, I want them to have opportunities to explore games and other activities which allow them to use creativity and curiosity while also having FUN! Learning through play is for any age!
