My Project

The learning games and puzzles in this project will help develop students' problem solving skills while also allowing them to be creative. Students will develop social skills of cooperation, teamwork, and empathy by learning to share and take turns with games and with building the puzzles. These students will also develop fine motor skills such as grasping and hand-eye coordination (the donut game) while expanding shape recognition (puzzles). Best of all, these skills will be developed with zero screen time, giving students much needed breaks from digital devices.

My favorite part of gaming in the library is letting the students teach each other and develop their compromise skills as they learn to work and play together.

The young students, especially in kindergarten, have a lot of playful energy that does not channel well into traditional library lessons. However, by having game days available, I can channel that energy into positive learning experiences. I have used puzzles with the older students and have seen that for many, putting together a jigsaw puzzle is a new experience. Solving puzzles helps to develop students' problem solving skills as does developing game-winning strategies.

I also see Game On at the Library as a way to help students develop perseverance. Often, when something doesn't come easily to a student, they give up, but with activities in the makerspace and some of the board games I've purchased for the older students, I see students working together (or with me) and persisting to achieve their goal. We often hear that children learn through play, and games and puzzles in the library offer students engaging ways to learn.
