My Students
Students in my classroom are creative, resilient and passionate about learning. I teach at a low income school, and my students face many challenges in their daily life. Many of my students are homeless, have incarcerated parents, and have experienced various types of childhood trauma. The odds are stacked against them, but they still have the courage to show up every day at school and learn.
My students come from Native American and other diverse backgrounds, and contribute much to the unique cultural makeup of our classroom.
My Project
Reluctancy in reading is one of the main contributions to low reading achievement. Many of my students struggle to find books that are engaging and interesting for them. I am constantly checking out books at the library to find books that engage my class. There is one genre of books that my students cannot get enough of: Graphic Novels.
Research has shown that graphic novels are a great way to engage reluctant readers.
According to Scholastic News, the pictures and varied amounts of text force students to slow down and more deeply comprehend their reading. Additionally, graphic novels are great for students with special needs or low reading abilities. Help me give my readers high enjoyment and learn to read for pleasure with a new selection of books.
