I teach Physical Education at a Title 1 school located in Central Florida, and my school has many unique challenges. The student’s that I teach have backgrounds that prevent them from getting ahead early in life. They are neglected from having many of the life experiences most Americans see as "typical." For example, we are a Title one school with a high poverty rate. In addition, the student population at my school is made up of many single parent households, as well as non-English speaking families.
Recently, many of our students lost everything and were displaced due the devastation of Hurricane Irma.
Additionally, my school has recently seen an enormous influx of refugees from Puerto Rico. This is especially challenging because our community is struggling to rebuild and get back on its feet because we were hit by hurricane Irma as well. Our goal at my school is to help our students get back to a state of normalcy as soon as possible. These students are longing for things in their lives to be the way they were. As an educator, I feel that it is my responsibility to be that support they need to persevere through this challenging time.
My Project
I am looking to enhance and enrich my students lives by providing them an opportunity to practice their striking skills through putt putt golf. Most of my students come from homes where funds are extremely tight and they don't have an opportunity to go to local putt putt courses to practice and have good time.
I'd like to bring that experience to them during their physical education classes and introduce them to striking patterns and proper holding techniques.
I want my students to have these life experiences and not miss out. I can remember going to putt putt courses as a child with my parents and having a blast, I don't want to see any child miss that opportunity to learn and develop.
