My school serves 4k-5th grade students and is a Title I school. We have students that come from many different backgrounds to include single-parent homes, living with grandparents, divorced families, and living with both parents. We also have different cultural backgrounds at our school to include Caucasian, African Americans, Hispanics, and Chinese. About 85 percent of the students at my school receive reduced rate or free lunch. We also have a program where students of need receive a bag of food for the weekend. Often students of mine come from very unique home situations. My students and their families often need a lot of support. My school is also piloting a new program this year to help families become stronger, collaborate better, and teach better communication skills, day teachers at my school teach these classes. Even with the needs of my students and their families my school makes every student feel at home when they are away from their home life. We teach them how to be leaders through our leader in me program and come together to make a difference in our school and surrounding community.
My Project
My students need place values discs to help them visualize and understand the concept of place value. These tools are also hands-on and during this time of their development using concrete materials really helps build that conceptual understanding. My students also need visual graphic organizers to help them solve math problems. At a very young age we all learn from a basic graphic organizer to help us learn. Lastly, my students need 10 frame visuals to help them understand a common math strategy that is very difficult for students to learn. Having all of these math items in my classroom would greatly benefit my students in many ways and help them not just remember procedural understanding of math concepts but to enhance their ability to gain that conceptual understanding needed to be a successful mathematician.
