My Students

My students write beautiful poetry and fantastic fictional stories. Now they need to learn how to write strong nonfiction text.

My students are a mix of certified gifted students, mainstreamed special education (autism) students, and all ability levels in between.

We have quite a range in our room! There are students whose families have come from China, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mexico, and France and are learning English as a second language. Our school is an International Baccalaureate School, a designated Distinguished School, and a Title 1 school. My students are eager to learn and like working together. They challenge themselves and support each other when it comes to academic obstacles; they are incredible to be around. I am lucky to get to work with such an energetic, caring group of students.

My Project

My students have mastered writing fiction and writing poetry but are not as skilled when it comes to writing nonfiction. I need stronger examples to share with my students which they can use as models for their own work. Gail Gibbons is such a prolific author. Her books will serve as excellent examples of how to structure nonfiction writing around a topic. I would like the students to work in small groups, reading several of her titles and discussing similarities they notice. If we can chart how Gail Gibbons presents information to her audience, we can think about structuring our own writing in a similar manner. They seem to be able to rattle off lists of their favorite authors without hesitation...but these are almost exclusively fiction writers. I want them to start including nonfiction authors as easily in their lists. Becoming more familiar with the nonfiction genre will make them stronger readers, but ultimately it will make them stronger writers, too.

We have an abundance of quality fiction and poetry texts in our classroom library, but are sorely lacking in solid examples of nonfiction text.

Gail Gibbons is an author I want to introduce to my budding writers. Her books are accessible, organized, and informative. She has a style and a voice that I want my students to recognize as easily as they recognize a Patricia Polacco book or a Roald Dahl story.
