Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have a special day class with 18 special learners who have various disabilities like autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities and behavioral needs. We will start our year with a readers and writers workshop where we will read The House on Mango Street together. While we read we will analyze the vocabulary we do not know in our composition books and take notes. We will use post its to tab our books and jot down thought or ideas so we do not write in the book and they can be reused. Finally, we will write our own journals and reflections just like the main character and answer prompts in our journals.
To start our unit on The House on Mango Street we need books for our whole class, 2 sets of journals for vocabulary work and for writing, and some tools like post-its and pencils for note taking.
I love exposing my special learners to rigorous reading materials that they can connect to culturally. Everyone should have access to books they can connect to on multiple levels that also challenge their thinking.
