My students need a class set of two novels, a portable puppet theater, 24 Mason Jars, and a pair of visual impairment goggles for various lessons in the Teacher Cadet curriculum.
I am beyond lucky to teach the students I do. They come from different walks of life and even cultures in a small, suburban community. Many of the students face financial challenges but have managed to care for and respect one another over their years together.
These students are working toward becoming educators themselves.
They are positioning themselves for hard work and success in the future. In order to achieve the hefty goals set fourth by the program they are enrolled in, they will need financial assistance because many of them simply do not have available funds at home to pay for the requirements of the class.
My Project
The supplies I'm requesting are to be used this year (and in future years) for my Teacher Cadet course. The first novel, 32 Third Graders and One Class Bunny, is our summer reading assignment. Unfortunately, I was not given budget approval to order a class set of books, so my students are currently responsible for purchasing their own to go along with the essay assignment requirement that is completed over the summer.
One of the topics I cover in the course is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
The Fault in Our Stars is a great book to further explore the concepts outlined in Maslow's theory. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a class set of this novel approved either, so I have not been able to tie the two together in class. With your donation, I will be able to!
One of the major topics we cover during the first marking period focuses on self-esteem. One of the ways I teach the students how impactful self-esteem is on education is through the use of Pot Notes where students write a positive note to each other every day for several weeks to "fill our pots" and we need the Mason Jars to store the notes.
To conclude the self-esteem chapter, the students have a culminating project of creating a self-esteem based puppet show. The past two years I have had my students create stages out of old cardboard boxes. However, creating and decorating these stages takes far too long, detracting from valuable class time.
Finally, the visual impairment goggles are for use during our Educational Barriers unit where simulations are presented for students to learn what it is like be faced with the barriers some of their future students may experience.
