Stress is too much to handle for some of my students. Children at this age learn better through hands-on activities especially in science. Drill and kill or sit down worksheets do not help them gain understanding of the science concepts they need to acquire and learn in order to be successful.
Lessons presented in a fun and engaging way help my fifth grade students maintain their focus and stamina.
Teaching in a Title I school in North Carolina many of my students find it challenging to sit still. They have emotional and other extraneous factors to deal with from day-to-day, which affect how they cope in class. They require lessons to be presented in a multitude of ways with so much repetition.
The STEM materials from Lakeshore will be utilized in my Math class. With STEM Learning Labs, Simple Machines Activity Tub, Giant Roller Ramps-Master Set, and a Measurement Center students will learn core academic skills, coordination and fine motor skills. At the same time, these materials will be used to put the abstract concepts into a concrete manner so that my students can better understand and grasp them. Hopefully, they will be able to exhibit mastery of science skills, required by the curriculum, successfully and independently.
My students require scaffolding in instruction and having these materials will help so much.
I have special needs students who would like to become engineers, teachers, and aircraft mechanics. I would like to help them achieve their goals. With these materials, my students will be able to connect their learning inside the classroom to the real world and its demands for skilled workers.
