My Project
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -- Benjamin Franklin
My students learn best when given hands-on tasks involving teamwork.
This spring, my fifth graders will take the California Science Test (CAST) and respond to questions related to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) from third through fifth grade. These science kits will serve as engaging review activities before their assessment.
My students are enthusiastic 5th graders who are excited for their final year in elementary school. They are bursting with energy to have a successful year and are highly motivated to learn. My class is made up of 35% English Language Learners, which has me using various teaching methods to help them learn the English language along with the other 5th grade standards, including the Common Core. Being at a Title I school, we are limited to various supplies and often lack engaging science material. I often have to supplement my science lessons with other activities often created on my own and gather resources with my own funds.
I believe all my students will benefit from having Lakeshore's Meet the Standards Hands-On Science Complete Kits from Grades 3-5. These will be used as review before their CAST in the Spring. These will be beneficial because each kit will allow them to develop models and complete investigations as teams to review the concepts they must know from the last few years. Many of my students do not remember what they learned in science the year or two before coming to me, so these engaging activities will serve as a convenient and fun way to remember important content in each major science category.
