This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

It is important to have conversations involving the disparity in education and the effects in computer science. In order to increase the minority population in careers in computer science, we need to expose students to STEM. We need to advocate and develop a curriculum that elevates the progression to better prepare to utilize computer science. Talking about race, although hard is necessary because race is a defining social construct in American life. It is important to engage in thoughtful, respectful, and productive conversations.

A MacBook is needed for my Robotics Team to complete missions.

My students need to program the EV3 LEGO robots but need laptops in order to use the LEGO software to its full potential. Their goal is to create specific missions and compete in the First LEGO League competition, as well as competitions within our school district.

My Robotic Team creates, analyzes and executes various missions using the Mindstorm software; a MacBook will allow students to use all the components in the software.

Without it, my kids are at a disadvantage in programming the missions for the EV3 robots. The EV3 robot has sensors that cannot be used if it isn't programmed using a laptop. My students work so hard every day and deserve to be able to properly program the EV3 robots-they just need a MacBook to do it. With a protective case to protect the laptop will be great for my students.
