Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Special Education reading Intervention teacher working with groups of struggling or non-readers. I teach at a school where over 97% of the students qualify for free lunch/reduced lunch. My students are growing up in a school district that is identified as the poorest congressional district in our city where most of the families are living below poverty line.
My students are identified as struggling readers and writers and often lose focus during learning for reasons beyond their control .
I also support a group of dedicated and enthusiastic PreK3s (yes 3 year olds!) and with them and my upper grades I'm helping them develop socially and emotionally. My students are very hard working and even though most of them live in a community facing extreme poverty they come to class dedicated to work.
School is their refuge and a place to find their voice. Many of my students have disabilities specifically: learning disabilities, speech&language disabilities, ADHD and Autism. I want classroom resources that allows them access to their learning and to teach them strategies to manage their disabilities and gain independence over their own learning and find a voice!
My Project
My students are struggling readers and writers. With limited resources it's very hard to engage my students with what they are learning.
I want to give them the tools needed to elevate their learning to the next level and with Chromebooks students will be able to research culturally relevant topics that pertain to them and their community.
They will be able to establish an email address and have the opportunity to collaborate on classwork with their peers. They will also learn how to email community organizations to find out what opportunities are available to them and their families within the community. This project is about learning to research academic topics but it's also about self advocacy and learning to to navigate ones own community to find resources.
