Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 21 students. My students come from diverse backgrounds. Being a public school in rural New Mexico, we are blessed to have many cultures and backgrounds within our classroom. We have students who are living in poverty. We have students with special needs. Our school is in the middle of a small town, so we have a mix of middle-class working families and those struggling to make ends meet. We are a Title I school. We have about 600 students in our school.

My goal is always to create a classroom community, or as I like to call it, a family.

Kindergarten is all about exploring and getting along and that is our goal for the year! My students are kind and creative and love all of the opportunities that DonorsChoose.org has given to us!

My Project

The goal of this project is for kindergarten students to not only learn about insects, their homes, and structures, but for them also to form an appreciation for why insects are important to our own local ecosystem. We are requesting an ant habitat, ladybug land, and several books and encyclopedias of insects. We would also like to conduct research to learn more about famous naturalists, entomologists, and artists who made the study of insects their lives. Some of the notable people we will learn about are Jean-Henri Fabre (famous naturalist), Anna Comstock (trailblazer in nature education), Louis Fuentes (nature artist), and Maria Merian (one of the first naturalists). We will conduct our own research with the ant habitat and ladybug land!

Students who are bitten by the bug of learning will appreciate their environment and habitat for years to come.

My sincere hope is that this project will spark a fire for students in the study of something in our the world around them and that they will appreciate the scientists who came before them. I think putting a spotlight on the study of the environment can encourage our young learners to explore and understand that there can be careers in such a field. This is especially important for my female students. I would like to show them that girls can study bugs, too!
