Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Digital Divide exists and my students are on their way to overcoming it! These future Media Movers and Shakers are learning the new media in order to provide more positive images of African American and Latino peoples in the media.

My future Media Movers and Shakers are an amazing group of African-American and Latino 8th graders.

Our school, Century Community Charter School, is a project-based school whose mission is to educate the future leaders of America. One of the opportunities available is the Media Studies class where they learn to evaluate and use new media such as blogging and podcasting. As they use the tools, they also critically look at how media influences society and our perception of the world. My Media Studies class is not the only class using new media. I am also using new media in my Language Arts classes to bring literature and writing alive. They complete assignments online and will also create digital stories through the use of HyperStudio. By incorporating the new media in my class,I am also exposing my students to opportunities they may not have and also allowing them to compete with their more fortunate peers.

My Project

A common misconception is that the current generation is extremely media savvy, when in actuality, only teenagers who have access to the new media are media savvy. Many of my students do not have access to this new media and are therefore falling behind their peers. For many of my students, my class is the first time they have created or used email! While my students have access to computers and cameras through CCCS, they do not have access to the finer tools necessary to create a professional multimedia project. The microphones will allow students to record themselves using quality equipment. They will be able to record voice-over for their digital stories as well as use the microphones for podcasts that can be shared with the school.

My goal with using new media in my class is to expose my students to different professional areas and careers.

Many of my students believe they can only be doctors, lawyers, athletes or rappers. I want them to know that there are other opportunities available to them and by exposing them to the new media and expanding their creative selves, I hope my students decide to become future media movers and shakers.
