This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This has been a very exciting, and somewhat frustrating start of the school year for my yearbook class. As a new class for me to teach, I went into it ready to explore all of the great ideas and concepts we have as a class. And then the classroom was broken into, and robbed.
My students are a very driven and ambitious group of seventh and eighth graders.
We are a Title One school that is very diverse in culture and ethnicity. This school year we were given a new textbook to teach the many wonderful ins and outs that go with being a young journalist in order to better prepare the kids to assemble a better yearbook.
The kids have been working very hard at learning how to write better leads to stories that are truly captivating of their audience. They are learning to dig deeper when they interview to get the information that inquiring minds want to know. But as of yet, we have not begun assembling the actual pages of our book.
My Project
The children will use the notebooks in the next semester as they continue their writing and interview work. As for the SD cards, all of our cameras for the class have been stolen, and so we have been borrowing the school camera until new ones arrive. The cards will store the pictures for the kids so that they can use the cameras when they arrive and go on photography assignments.
The card readers will allow the kids to input the pictures into a computer for access when the time comes to assemble their assigned yearbook pages. We are waiting for 10-12 previously used laptops to come our way from the staff once we have a locking storage unit to keep them safe. Finally, the surge protectors will allow the kids to use the computers anywhere in the room in the even they did not get a full charge.
Please consider our class when making your donations.
These supplies will make the job of these young journalists much easier and meaningful. Putting together the yearbook for the school should be a fun and exciting experience. Not one met with so many obstacles.
