Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is both ethnically and financially very diverse. But, I feel that both myself and my students benefit from the mix of students we have as it provides access to opinions, cultures and situations that each student may not experience themselves.
The students in the Crafts I and II classes are true artists; they come from varying backgrounds both in thier financial and ethnic backgrounds.
It truely is a vibrant group and it shows in their artistic styles. They get along well and are great about bouncing ideas and offering opinions to aid each other's work. They bring the colors and styles from the variety of cultures they come from into their work. This is a group I am certain will produce wonderful, creative jewelry.
My Project
I have two Crafts I classes and one Crafts II class. Our next marking period is Jewelry Making but we are short on supplies. For example, each class of 28 has to share 8 pairs of pliers. Because I have very limited supplies in things like the Sculpy and Primo clays we use, it makes completing projects very slow. I also think that adding in a bench grinder instead of having students share the single Dremel we have will give us another work station and open up other areas they can be working while waiting for alternate tools.
I have great confidence in the group of kids I have in Crafts this year!
They are so talented and I want to afford them the opportunity to let their creative minds soar. We really need more pliers, work areas and clay supplies to let them work continuously and not have to stop and start. Sharing is fine but we just need a few more of everything so kids don't have to wait so long to use tools.
In our Jewelry segment the kids will make polymer clay picture canes and create their own picture beads. They will learn to cut sheet metal and make necklace pendants. They will also make some paper beads to add to their jewelry pieces.
