Last year I had the amazing experience of teaching my second grade students about plant life. However, due to my school's severely depressed socioeconomic status, resources were (and still are) lacking and limited. As a result, I was unable to provide the students with the hands on step-by-step process of propagating plants. Unfortunately, all I could provide to them were matured plants and photographs of plants to explain their structures and functions. While the students seem to enjoy our plant life project, they exuded a thirst for more, which I was unable to satisfy. This year I would like to provide my students with a more profound and rewarding experience by using the Foss Science "New Plant" module kit. The Foss Science kits will allow each student to grow and develop their individual plants from seedling to mature plant life while single-handedly caring for and nurturing their plants. I believe this experience will not only fulfill their natural curiosities, but also provide them with the tools needed to comprehend and appreciate the importance of plant life. While books and photographs will aid in teaching about plant life, I want my students to go beyond the pictures and text and experience it for themselves. I believe hands on manipulation sparks interest thus discovery and ultimately leading them to answers. I hope through the experience of using the Foss Science "New Plant" module kits, my students will not only come to appreciate the importance of plant life, but also possibly identifying the future horticulturalists or farmers within them.
