Future Entomologists

My Students

Help my students become excited about insects! I am a second grade teacher who teaches reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies. I work at a charter school in a low-income/high poverty area in a major inner city.

Science class is the time my students really look forward to everyday.

My students enjoy science class because they are allowed to explore and really take control of their own learning. They enjoy interpreting and applying science lessons using their own individual learning styles, and by working with science materials. They love using their hands while comfortably learning at their own pace. Unfortunately, I have an extremely limited supply of science materials. This holds my students back from a complete approach to learning science.

My Project

My students need some samples of live insect specimens. These specimens will serve as an awesome visual that will support learning about insect characteristics. They will also be able to effectively compare, contrast and classify insects. The insect library will also support the insect education by offering more information. It will also allow me to integrate the reading strategies and skills with science. The butterfly nursery will allow students to witness and real-life insect life cycle. This will encourage my students to ask questions, to apply vocabulary and to view nature first-hand inside the classroom.

With these resources you will give me the opportunity to solidify a scientific foundation for my students.

You will also make it possible for my students to make scientific connections across other content areas. Students grasp and retain what is taught by making connections, which is what learning is all about. Your help will ensure that my students move to the next grade level with confidence, and a prior knowledge that is ready to be built upon.
