This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a high poverty school district and a Title I school, I see my students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Gangs roam the neighborhood recruiting them at a very young age. Despite the challenges they have, many students are eager to be the exception and strive for excellence. I aim to provide my students with meaningful, yet creative learning experiences. Our school's motto is to prepare leaders in mind, body, and character for success in college, career, and a life of service within the global community through an education that values honor, courage, and commitment.

My Project

One of my favorite classroom assignments is the bridge building challenge. In this project, students will apply mathematical and engineering concepts to design, build and test balsa wood bridges. With the ongoing pandemic, teaching a hands-on subject like Engineering is difficult since we cannot meet face to face or share supplies. I cannot assume that students have the tools they need.

The balsa wood and cutters will allow my students to each have the necessary materials and tools to independently design and build a bridge.

It will help build their engineering skills and abilities while providing them with a hands-on opportunity to learn.
