Future Engineers and Coders Begin With Lego WeDo Kits!

My Students

As a STEAM specialist, I am privileged to work with each and every one of the students in our elementary school. A majority of those students qualify for free or reduced lunch. But, they show up every day. They show up eager to learn. Eager to share their passions. Eager for hugs. Eager to grow!

Our school's student population is incredibly diverse.

This is one of my favorite things about this group of students. Every day, I hear multiple languages and learn about different traditions. The students love to share their personal experiences with me and with each other. We all learn from each other and grow together!

My Project

My student's have been working hard on their engineering skills in my classroom. So far, we have used recyclables such as cardboard, plastic bottles, and packing foam to engineer satellites, gliders, rockets, and solar ovens!

It is time to take their engineering experiences to the next level by incorporating coding into their creations!

Lego WeDo 2.0 Kits do a great job of making engineering and coding accessible for students of all ability levels. Students can choose to follow step by step instructions to build and code a variety of creations. Once they are comfortable with the process they can build and code on their own with as much or as little guidance from the app and myself as they would like.

With my younger grades, we will read The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot before using the kit to engineer and code rovers for the aliens to use and a house to protect them from the robot.

My students get so excited every time I announce that they will need their iPads for the next lesson. Help me use that excitement to encourage each of my students to see themselves as engineers and coders!
