This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade students that live in a high need community. My students attend a pretty small school that has one small playing area. This designed playing area does not have equipment big enough to entertain my students during recess break.
My students have showed me interest in learning how to play baseball. They have been using one plastic bat and tennis balls during recess time. They have been begging for me to teach them how to "Correctly Play" the game because they enjoy playing this sport. I have been teaching them about the positions and rules during Physical Education time. I have even asked them to watch a game on T.V. since the World Series is currently going on. My students come back eager to tell me just how much fun it was to watch the game. They beg me to let them play baseball during our Physical Education block. It's great! I personally am more of a Basketball fan but now am eager to watch the World Series just so that my students and I can talk about it during class. Even my husband has been noticing how much I anticipate watching the games.
My students are in desperate need of equipment. We need several bats, balls, and bases. We have been using a plastic yellow hollow bat which was donated by my three year old and we have been using our "Chair Socks" aka tennis balls to get our project started. I am not going to lie to you, my students and I have been having so much fun playing everyday. Most of my students have never played the game and so far everyone is eager to play. Yes! Even the girls. My students do not complain about our equipment. They just want to play. My students will benefit by this project because it will help them build sportsmanship. They live in a pretty tough neighborhood that lacks playgrounds and safe parks. It is so sad how limited our resources are. My students have trouble sharing because they often only have a 1-20 ratio. The worse thing of all, is that no one has ever taken the time to teach them how to play a sport or follow the rules. The only rules they know is how to line up quietly and how to behave in school.
Please help make a difference for these children. It makes me so sad to see that all they have access to is jump ropes and hoola hoops. So far, I have been able to purchase many hand balls. We spice things up during P.E. time by switching from handball to basketball (using handballs of course), to track, and now baseball.
