Future Doctors! Help Elementary Kids Learn Biology Through Dissections
Help me give my students a love of biology and anatomy. This project includes dissection tools, goggles, cow eyes, fetal pigs, fish, hearts, brains, and kidneys. Help develop future doctors, nurses and veterinarians.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Thank you for considering sponsoring us. I have a group of 4th graders who are interested in science. We recently watched a mystery science video involving a dissection of a cow's eyeball, and students got super excited. When asked if they were interested in learning more about biology, the vast majority of students said they would love to. We have several students who want to be vets or doctors when they are older. The materials from this request will help students get the opportunity to explore science concepts.
Please help urban 4th graders get a chance at learning biology and anatomy through dissections.
Included are several different things we would need for the dissections. Some of it we can reuse each year, such as the classroom science dissection tools and the safety goggles. Others will be specific to this year's students. This is primarily the specimens.
We would like to start out small with the owl pellets to gather interest. Then this will lead to the cow eyeballs as we discuss how the eye works. Next will be focuses on the brain, kidney, and heart respectively. We will study how each organ works and then dissect sheep brains, kidneys, and hearts. Then we will go on to see how all the organs work together by dissecting a perch. The final, culminating activity will be allowing students to dissect a fetal pig.
My students come from an urban school. 100% of the students receive free lunches. We are an extended school year, so students go in the summer to help keep the summer learning gap from forming. This will benefit two groups of 4th graders this year, and the reusable materials will go towards other fourth grade classes of the future. Help our kids learn biology through dissections!
