"Every child is an artist. The problem is how do we remain an artist once we grow up?" -Pablo Picasso. How do we inspire students creativity without supplies to ignite their imaginations? Help us create masterpieces and teach the significance art has on our everyday lives.
The arts are losing funding left and right.
We are lucky to be able to have art in our school at all. I want to be able to give my students a similar art experience to the one I had that gives them self-esteem and encourage them to be successful in all subjects.
I teach in a high poverty Title 1 school that services students from the women's shelter and has a very high percentage of students that receive free or reduced lunch. We have a wonderfully diverse student population, giving us unique opportunities to learn about different cultures. It makes our school dynamic more interesting and very fun. My students come to school ready to learn and try new things. Over the last 2 years they have shown exceptional growth and deserve the best education we can give them. The opportunity to incorporate the arts into the themes they're learning throughout the year helps solidify ideas and gets them excited about what they're learning.
My Project
I am requesting air dry clay for a project called "One Million Bones," that will give our students the opportunity to raise awareness and help people in crisis by creating bones to raise money for CARE and their work on the ground in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We hope to give our students a sense of purpose and keep them up to date about big things happening in our world. I have also requested masks to celebrate our vast latino and Hispanic population. I want my students to remember learning about different artists and techniques as we explore different mediums and the impact art can have on their lives and the lives of others.
Art gives students opportunities to learn about spacial relationships, collaborate with others and can give them a sense of pride in their work.
Having new and different materials to be creative with will enhance their school experience and give them another reason to want to come to school.
