My Students
Visual art serves as an expressive outlet for my middle school students. With recent cuts to all fine art programs, students here at BMS are limited to essential materials in our department. As an art educator and advocate for self-expression, I believe the arts to be a 21st-century vehicle for change, growth, and manifestation within our youth. School, more specifically art education, should be a safe place to be who you are, learn from different people and learn how to appreciate and celebrate diversity and commonalities through making. I want to provide my students with the necessary materials to do so.
Located in Atlanta with a population of 600 students, BMS is a Title I school where 100% of the students qualify for free lunch.
A full 98% of the population is African-American and 2% are white, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander or other. The common denominator that unifies all these different groups are the arts. Creativity breeds creativity and in this Internet-Age being creative plays a vital role in 21st-century education.
My Project
I chose basic art materials such as paint, paint brushes, canvases, and construction paper in order to further my students' knowledge in formal art education. My students so far have created art projects that were dry medium heavy using materials like graphite, colored pencils, and oil pastel. I would like to provide my students with the opportunity to experience a wet medium, such as paint. Painting is an essential art practice. I like to think when most think of art they think of painting. My students have worked hard thus far and deserve a chance to paint a masterpiece! By being able to gift them with these art items, it will motivate them and they will continue to work hard.
