Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are smart, creative, and community-minded. They are interested and curious about the world around them. They want to understand why the inequities exist in our society, so that they can figure out how to challenge and transform our society.
While my students face many challenges, they have high hopes for their futures and many of them will be the first in their families to attend college.
They amaze me with the many ways they are able to do so much with few resources.
We are a Title I school, so we need a lot of extra resources, especially if we want to order supplies or class sets of books. A high percentage of students receive free and reduced-price lunch, so it is also another financial burden for families to purchase extra supplies.
My Project
My students have a lot of pride when it comes to where they are from. They love to represent our city for both its beauty and its flaws. What my students have wondered is how our city became the way it is and why some neighborhoods have million dollar homes with many amenities, while other neighborhoods in our city are considered low-income and do not even have one grocery store. Students often ask, "How did our city get this way? Has it always been this way?" I add the question, "Does it have to stay this way?" My hope is that through our community mapping project, students will be able to recommend solutions to local officials about what our communities need.
This is the first year that our school has had a Geography class, I want to make sure that my students have the supplies they need for our "Future City Cartography Project".
My students will conduct research about major cities around the world, create resource maps of our city, interview local city planners, make recommendations to our city council about ways our city can be improved, and design a "future city" based on their research.
Everyday in our class, we will study maps, ask questions about why the cartographer chose to represent the land in a particular way, and practice making our own maps. Students will learn the basic principles of geography and become "everyday geographers" who observe the world around them and note how one place looks, feels, smells, and sounds different from another place, and what impact those differences have on communities.
My hope is that by paying closer attention to the world around them, they will be more intentional about how they interact in and with the world, and see how their actions have impact.
