This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you learn by just listening or do you need to see it too? I needed to always try things out and visualize what I was doing to do well on tests and in life. I want my students to be able to learn through manipulatives, books and videos.
I teach 25 amazingly bright, eager, energetic five and six year olds that just want to learn and share.
My students are challenged by both financial challenges and language challenges as our school is a Title 1, free lunch, 98% Spanish speaking school. With all the challenges that face my students, they are still so eager to learn and the parents want them to have the best.
My school is in a district that is financially struggling. The teachers have faced many furlough days, the classroom numbers went up, librarian, secretaries, custodial staff and other important positions have been cut this year, so funding is extremely limited. The children need so much more to further their development and unfortunately with the cuts, I can not offer them all they need to make learning fun and help their language, writing, science and fine and gross motor skills.
My Project
As the children are learning how to spell and write, they need the material to document their process. I am asking for writing journals to be used now and the last part of the school year. With two journals, the children will be able to see their growth from one journal to the next. They will see their growth in writing, penmanship and drawing.
I also want the children to gain independence by learning how to tie their own shoes. Having shoes to lace up will allow the children the opportunity to practice and learn on something a bit bigger than their own shoes.
Finally we are using a program called Between the Lions to supplement our reading program. These videos help the ELD students, challenged students and others , visualize words and hear the words through puppets and songs. We are trying to increase our Between the Lions library with another DVD and Between the Lions reading games.
If I could provide all these materials to the children I know it would help in their development of writing and reading.
We are provided with newsprint paper to write with. However, this paper rips when erased and I believe it prohibits the children's creativity. I am asking for journals that can stay with the children as a keepsake and reminder of their first year in school.
