Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a very energetic and lively group of first graders in the Bronx. My students love learning about new topics that interest and excite them. My goal is to be able to find new and exciting ways to get my students motivated to become better readers, writers and problem solvers. Giving options for learning is essential for differentiating to the various needs of my diverse students. They are curious, inquisitive, and love coming to school each day. They live in an area in the Bronx that has a lot of poverty, and most students receive free or reduced-price lunch. But despite these circumstances, they come to school with a good attitude every day and crave new and fun ways to learn. I am always looking for new ways to engage them and motivate them to improve and make progress towards their goals. Students in our school are mostly English language learners and require many different resources and aids to help them reach their goals.

My Project

My students need these various writing materials to help them make progress in meeting their individual writing goals. Students will use the writing tools to help them take their writing topics through the writing process. They need the large pencils to help them properly form their letters correctly. The pencil grips will help them hold the pencil in a comfortable way. The students need various types of writing utensils such as markers, crayons and colored pencils to allow for choice when choosing what they want to write with. It helps the students take ownership over their writing. The wipe off boards will be used in small group instruction to allow for students to show the teacher what they can do independently. Lastly, the magnetic letters will be used so the students can practice constructing their sight words one letter at a time.

We will stock the writing center with everything they need to help them feel like an accomplished author and they will be proud to share their writing with their peers.

They will be able to work in small groups and in a whole class setting without having to worry about a lack of materials. Students will grow their ability to write with stamina and confidence.
