My Students

The community in which my school belongs is one of great cultural and economic diversity. Many of my students are English Language Learners who come from various places. A good percentage of my students come from the neighboring reservation. Numerous students have varying levels of special academic needs. And, many students hail from households that range from homelessness to wealthy.

Regardless of my students cultural, academic, and socio-economic backgrounds, this past year and a half has limited the opportunities for these wonderful kids to learn science in a practical, hands-on setting, alongside collective groups of peers.

My Project

Science is more than conceptual learning in a classroom. Telescopes offer a real-world, hands-on experience to students learning about Astronomy. The ability to manipulate the device, locate celestial objects, and witness firsthand deep space objects is meaningful, engaging, and memorable. Throughout their course curriculum, students learn about various objects in space. Telescopes would provide opportunities for students to assess what they have learned by properly locating and identifying these various objects. Furthermore, telescopes would provide opportunities for enrichment for students of all backgrounds and academic abilities.

The intention for using these telescopes would be to provide students the opportunity to demonstrate growth by identifying what they have learned about celestial objects.

In the classroom setting, students would learn what a particular object is, and then in a practical field setting, they would then show proficiency by locating and correctly identifying the same objects in the night sky.

Additionally, under a teacher supervised and controlled environment, student will be able to host telescope labs themselves, and instruct smaller groups of peers or family members. These activities would also give family members an opportunity to have a positive science experience that they can share with their children.
