"I love the old adage: Tell me and I forget, show me and I'll remember. Involve me and I will understand. I feel that this is at the heart of inquiry-based learning (not just in science) but in all disciplines. When I looked up inquiry in the dictionary- it said a seeking or request for knowledge.
Working in a culturally diverse school brings many rewards and challenging.
The rewards come with every day successes that are experienced in the classroom. The challenges arise when over 77% of our children receive free lunch and we cannot purchase extra supplies needed for our science labs. I want our children to have the same experiences as the schools in the other part of town. Not having money should not deter us from offering our students great experiences.
My Project
Through a very interactive Science Class, students explore the wonder of flight. Using the original drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, the intuition of the Wright Brothers, the tragedy of Apollo 1, and the success of Apollo 11, students relive the excitement of the space program.
This nine weeks we are studying energy, force, and motion. They will make alka-seltzer rockets, paper airplanes, and water rockets, but imagine their surprise when we take them to the playground and present them with the opportunity to shoot off a rocket of their own.
We love to encourage our students to do their best in everything they do.....Thanks for helping us give them a surprise that they will not soon forget.
The rockets will help our students know that they can shoot for the stars in everything they do.
